Interactive algebra

Learn equations by keeping the scale balanced.

EquiliPrism turns algebra into a visual puzzle. Students use a balance scale to see why the same operation must happen on both sides of an equation.

What students learn

Variables, equality, inverse operations, one-step equations, two-step equations, negative values, and systems of equations.

Who it is for

Early learners can practice counting and addition. The activities adapt from grade 3 algebra through high school equation systems.

Why the model works

A balanced scale makes equality concrete: changing only one side makes it tip, while equal changes preserve balance.

How to solve an equation with the balance method

  1. Read the equation as two equal sides of a scale. For example, in x + 2 = 6, the unknown value and two units balance six units.
  2. Remove the same two units from both sides. The scale stays level, leaving x = 4.
  3. Check the result by substituting the value: 4 + 2 = 6. Both sides have the same value.

Practice algebra interactively

In the Balance Lab, learners drag weights, variable chests, and negative-value balloons onto a scale. Each challenge adapts to the selected grade level, progressing from visual counting to multi-step algebra and systems of equations.
